Scientists Find an Amazon Spider That Disguises Itself as a Parasitic Fungus
Deep in the Ecuadorian Amazon, during a nighttime survey of the rainforest, a group of scientists spotted what they were sure was a small mushroom clinging to the underside of a leaf. They were wrong. What they had actually found was a spider so committed to its disguise that even trained researchers were fooled — and it turned out to be a species completely new to science.
The spider has been named Taczanowskia waska, and it has earned the informal nickname the “Cordyceps spider” because of the extraordinary thing it mimics. Mimicry is when one organism evolves to look or behave like another organism to gain some kind of survival advantage. This particular spider has evolved to resemble Gibellula, a type of parasitic fungus — a fungus that invades and kills other organisms — that specifically grows on spiders. This is the first time scientists have ever documented a spider copying the appearance of a fungus that infects spiders, making Taczanowskia waska genuinely one of a kind.
So what exactly makes this spider look like a fungus? Its body is pale in color, and it has elongated structures extending from its abdomen that closely resemble the thread-like growths of real fungal bodies. Think of it like a living, breathing piece of mold wearing a very convincing fungal suit. But the disguise does not stop at looks. The spider also behaves like the fungus it is imitating. It remains completely motionless — staying as still as a statue — on the undersides of leaves, which is precisely the location where real Gibellula fungi are found growing on their spider hosts. Behavior and appearance together create a disguise that is remarkably hard to see through.
Scientists believe this two-part disguise serves the spider in two important ways. Predators — animals that hunt and eat other animals — that would normally prey on spiders are likely to ignore something that looks like a dead, fungus-infected spider. A moldy spider is simply not an appealing meal. At the same time, the disguise may help the spider hunt more effectively. Insects and other small prey that might normally avoid a spider could wander too close without realizing the danger, giving the spider the element of surprise.
The researchers found the spider in the Llanganates-Sangay Corridor, a stretch of Ecuador's Amazon rainforest that is famous among scientists for its extraordinary biodiversity — meaning the sheer variety of different species that live there. The discovery was made by an international team from institutions including the Leibniz Institute for the Analysis of Biodiversity Change in Germany, and the findings were published in the scientific journal Zootaxa. Nadine Dupérré, a researcher at the Museum of Nature Hamburg, helped classify the new species by comparing it with historical specimens — preserved examples of related spiders — stored in scientific collections.
What makes this discovery even more remarkable is how it started: not in a lab, but on the internet. A nature enthusiast posted a photograph on iNaturalist, a citizen science platform where everyday people can upload photos of wildlife they encounter. The person who took the photo thought they had spotted a mushroom. Other users on the platform looked more carefully and realized it was actually a spider, which prompted scientists to investigate further. This chain of events — from a curious person with a camera to a peer-reviewed scientific publication — shows just how powerful citizen science can be. The genus Taczanowskia, the broader group of spiders that this new species belongs to, is considered rare and is still poorly understood.
