Parrots May Use Names to Identify Specific Individuals, Study Finds

If you have ever heard a parrot shout out someone's name across a room, you might have laughed and assumed it was just doing what parrots do β€” copying sounds it had heard before. But a new scientific study suggests something far more interesting might be going on. Some parrots may actually understand that names belong to specific individuals, and they may use those names on purpose, almost the way you do when you call out to a friend in the hallway at school.

Parrots have long been celebrated for their ability to mimic human speech. Mimicry means reproducing sounds made by others, and parrots are among the best in the animal kingdom at it. But mimicry alone does not explain everything researchers found in this new study. Lauryn Benedict, a biology professor at the University of Northern Colorado, and her longtime collaborator Christine Dahlin of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown wanted to know whether parrots were doing something more sophisticated than simple imitation. They wanted to know if parrots were using names as labels β€” connecting a specific sound to a specific individual the way humans do.

To investigate, the team analyzed data from the ManyParrots project, a large collaborative research network that studies how parrots learn, communicate, and think. The researchers examined recordings and survey information from more than 880 captive, or pet, parrots β€” birds that live alongside people and regularly hear names being used in everyday conversation. Nearly half of the people who participated in the survey submitted audio examples of their parrots saying names, giving the researchers a rich collection of real-world vocal behavior to study.

Out of 413 recordings that included name use, 88 showed strong evidence of parrots using names as labels for specific people or animals. This is an important distinction: the birds did not seem to be applying names broadly to all humans or all animals. Instead, they appeared to associate a particular name with a particular individual β€” the same mental connection you make when you hear your best friend's name and picture that one specific person, not everyone you have ever met.

The study also uncovered some especially fascinating patterns. Several parrots repeatedly said their own names as a strategy for getting attention. This is a remarkably creative use of language β€” using your own name to signal your presence or a desire to be noticed. Even more striking, some parrots appeared to refer to individuals who were not present in the room at the time. In human communication, this kind of reference β€” talking about someone who is not right there with you β€” is considered a fairly advanced skill. Seeing it appear in parrots opens up big questions about the depth of their social awareness.

Dahlin was careful to point out that the research does not prove parrots use names in exactly the same way humans do. Animal communication signals can be very different from human language, and scientists do not yet fully understand the intent behind every sound a parrot makes. Differences between parrot species, and even between individual birds of the same species, mean there is still a great deal to learn. The findings were published in the scientific journal PLOS ONE, and researchers say this study raises more fascinating questions than it answers β€” which is exactly what good science is supposed to do.

What we can say is that parrots appear to have both the mental ability β€” called cognition, meaning the capacity to think, learn, and understand β€” and the vocal skills needed to use names flexibly for different social purposes. Whether they are calling for attention, identifying a companion, or referring to someone across the room, these birds are showing us that the line between animal communication and human-like language use may be thinner than we once thought. The more scientists listen, the more parrots seem to have to say.
