Mohenjo-daro: The Ancient City That Grew More Equal as It Got More Powerful

When most people picture ancient civilizations, they imagine towering pyramids, gold-filled royal tombs, and god-kings ruling over masses of ordinary people. That picture is accurate for ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia โ€” but a new study shows it does not apply to one of the ancient world's largest and most sophisticated cities. Mohenjo-daro, a city built by the Indus civilization around 4,000 years ago in what is now Pakistan, appears to have worked on a completely different set of principles. Instead of wealth flowing upward to a small elite, researchers at the University of York found evidence that prosperity was spread broadly across the population โ€” and that things actually got more equal over time, not less.

The Indus civilization flourished from roughly 3300 to 1300 BCE across a vast region that today spans Pakistan and northwestern India. Mohenjo-daro was its largest city, and for a long time historians were puzzled by what they did not find there. There were no grand palaces, no golden royal tombs, and no statues of rulers. Compared to the monuments of Egypt or the palace complexes of ancient Greece at a site called Knossos, Mohenjo-daro seemed strangely quiet about power. The new research, published in the academic journal Antiquity, offers the most detailed explanation yet for why that might be.

The research team, led by Dr. Adam Green from the University of York's Department of Archaeology, used a smart method to measure inequality โ€” something called the Gini coefficient. This is a statistical tool, meaning it uses numbers and data to measure something, and in this case it measures how evenly or unevenly wealth is spread across a group. A Gini score of zero would mean everyone is completely equal; a score of one would mean a single person holds all the wealth. By measuring the sizes of homes across different periods of the city's history, the team used house size as a stand-in for household wealth, since larger homes generally suggest more resources. What they found was striking: as Mohenjo-daro grew and matured, the gap between the biggest and smallest homes actually narrowed. By its later years, the city's inequality levels had dropped to something closer to what you might find in early farming villages โ€” far lower than in comparable ancient societies in Mesopotamia or Greece.

What does a more equal city actually look like? At Mohenjo-daro, the answer involves some remarkably practical achievements. The city invested heavily in infrastructure โ€” the systems and structures that keep a city running โ€” including sophisticated brick-lined drainage systems, organized street grids, and a standardized system of weights and measures used across the whole region. These were not luxuries for the rich. They were shared resources available to ordinary households. Think of it as the ancient equivalent of a city investing in clean water systems and public roads instead of building a palace. The city's famous Indus seals, small stamp-like objects used in trade and commerce, were found primarily inside regular homes rather than in central official buildings, suggesting that economic activity and decision-making power were distributed across many households rather than concentrated in a single authority.

This challenges one of the oldest and most repeated ideas in the study of human history: that as societies grow bigger and more productive, inequality inevitably rises. The logic behind that idea is straightforward โ€” growth requires coordination, coordination requires leadership, and leaders tend to accumulate power and wealth. But Mohenjo-daro seems to be a counterexample, a real historical case where growth and equality went together rather than pulling in opposite directions. Dr. Green noted that the period when inequality appeared lowest also coincided with the city's highest productivity, suggesting that sharing resources may have actually strengthened the city rather than slowing it down.

Researchers are careful to note that many questions remain open. The full picture of how Mohenjo-daro governed itself is still not completely understood โ€” there is no written record that has been decoded from the Indus civilization, so conclusions must be drawn carefully from physical evidence alone. But the physical evidence that does exist, from house sizes to drainage networks to the distribution of trade tools, consistently points in the same direction: this was a city built around collective benefit rather than individual dominance.
