Jian changmaensis: The Four-Winged Dinosaur That May Have Hunted Ancient Birds Like a Gliding Predator

Deep in a fossil bed in northwestern China, researchers have been puzzling over a strange mystery for years. Scattered across the site were the remains of hundreds of prehistoric birds โ€” but many of their bones had been crushed into tight, compacted clumps, almost exactly like the pellets that modern owls cough up after swallowing prey whole. Something had been hunting these ancient birds and leaving behind the evidence. The problem was, scientists could never find the predator responsible โ€” until now. A newly identified dinosaur species called Jian changmaensis has just been announced, and it is the leading suspect.

The discovery was published in the Annals of Carnegie Museum by a team of researchers from institutions including the Field Museum in Chicago and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Jian changmaensis lived approximately 120 million years ago during the Cretaceous period, a time when non-bird dinosaurs and the earliest true birds shared the same skies and forests. The fossil was found in the Changma Basin in China's Gansu province, and the dinosaur's name reflects both its appearance and its home: in Chinese mythology, a jian is a winged creature, and changmaensis refers to the Changma region where it was unearthed.

Jian belonged to a family of dinosaurs called dromaeosaurs โ€” the same group as Velociraptor. If you have seen the Jurassic Park films, you might picture velociraptors as tall, scaly, terrifying hunters. In reality, dromaeosaurs were typically small, fast, and covered in feathers, looking far more like oversized birds than movie monsters. Within the dromaeosaur family, Jian fits into an even more specialized group called microraptors, which were generally crow-sized and known for having feathers on all four limbs. Jian was unusually large for a microraptor: based on the length of a single arm bone โ€” about four inches โ€” researchers estimate the animal had a wingspan of roughly four feet, comparable to a barn owl.

That four-winged body plan is one of the most fascinating things about Jian and its microraptor relatives. While modern birds have two wings made from their front limbs, microraptors appear to have had long flight feathers growing from both their arms and their legs. Scientists hypothesize โ€” meaning they have reasoned evidence but not absolute proof โ€” that Jian used this arrangement to glide rather than to power itself through the air with flapping. Think of it like a flying squirrel: it cannot fly the way a bird does, but it can launch itself from a height and coast remarkable distances by spreading its limbs wide. Jian likely did something similar, which would have made it an effective aerial ambush predator targeting birds in the tree canopy.

What makes this discovery especially exciting to scientists is the ecological context โ€” meaning the picture it paints of how different animals lived and interacted in one place at one time. The Changma Basin is one of the richest sources of early bird fossils anywhere in the world, but until Jian, researchers had only found bird species there. The crushed bone clusters had been unexplained for years. "Jian is the only dinosaur found at this site that was not a bird, it was a carnivore, and it was much bigger than everything else we found there," said Jingmai O'Connor, the associate curator of fossil reptiles at the Field Museum and senior author of the study. That combination โ€” sole non-bird predator, meat-eater, right size for the job โ€” makes Jian the strongest candidate yet for what made those bone pellets.

The bigger lesson here connects to the birds you see every single day. Modern birds are the only dinosaurs that survived the mass extinction caused by a meteorite impact 66 million years ago. Everything else โ€” including dromaeosaurs like Jian โ€” disappeared. But for tens of millions of years before that, birds and non-bird dinosaurs lived side by side, competing, hunting, and evolving together. "You cannot understand life on the planet today without looking at its origins," said O'Connor. "Birds are arguably the most successful group of land-dwelling vertebrate animals on Earth today." Every pigeon, hawk, and hummingbird alive right now carries the evolutionary legacy of that ancient world โ€” and discoveries like Jian changmaensis help us understand exactly how that story unfolded.
