The Biggest Dinosaur Ever Lived โ€” So Why Can't Scientists Agree on Which One It Was?

A single neck bone from one of the largest dinosaurs ever discovered is nearly four feet long โ€” about as tall as an average fifth-grader. That one bone belongs to Patagotitan, a massive plant-eating dinosaur found in Argentina and currently one of the leading candidates for the title of largest dinosaur that ever lived. You might expect that finding the biggest animal in Earth's history would be straightforward, but the fossil record โ€” the collection of preserved ancient remains that scientists use to study prehistoric life โ€” has a habit of making things complicated. Determining which dinosaur truly takes the crown involves floods, scavengers, missing bones, and some creative detective work that researchers are still conducting today.

The biggest dinosaurs were a group called sauropods, long-necked, four-legged plant-eaters that could stretch over 100 feet from nose to tail and weigh more than 40 tons. To put that in perspective, a large African elephant weighs about six tons, meaning the heaviest sauropods may have weighed as much as nearly seven elephants stacked together. Recently, a new sauropod called Nagatitan was announced as the largest dinosaur yet uncovered in Thailand, likely stretching more than 88 feet in length. Other major contenders include Argentinosaurus, Futalognkosaurus, and Patagotitan โ€” but all of them share the same frustrating problem. Every single one is known only from an incomplete skeleton, which means every size estimate is exactly that: an estimate.

Missing bones matter more than you might think. Because the number of vertebrae โ€” the individual bones that make up the spine โ€” varied between species, even being off by one vertebra when reconstructing a dinosaur's backbone could significantly change the total length estimate. Scientists deal with this by using limb bones as a guide. There is a reliable relationship between how thick a dinosaur's leg bones were and how much the animal weighed: heavier animals needed thicker bones to support their bodies, the same way a bridge carrying heavy trucks needs stronger support beams than one carrying only bicycles. When a full leg bone is available, paleontologists can calculate a reasonably accurate body mass estimate. But when bones are missing entirely, researchers look to the skeletons of close relatives to fill the gaps, which introduces more room for error.

So why are complete skeletons so rare in the first place? Preserving the remains of an animal that weighed 40 or more tons was an enormous challenge even by nature's standards. When a sauropod died, its body needed to be buried quickly under mud or sediment before it decomposed or was scattered. Paleontologist Julia McHugh of the Museums of Western Colorado witnessed a massive flood along the Iowa River in 2008 that lasted for weeks and still only deposited about six inches of sediment near the river channel. Burying a dinosaur the length of two school buses end-to-end would have required something far more dramatic. McHugh studies the Mygatt-Moore Quarry in Colorado, a rich site packed with the bones of Apatosaurus, another giant sauropod. Her research found that many bones there were exposed for five to six months before burial, and some showed signs of lying on the surface for up to six years.

During those years of exposure, a lot could go wrong. When a giant sauropod died, its carcass โ€” the body of a dead animal โ€” became a major event for the surrounding ecosystem. Insects, snails, small mammals, and large carnivores like Allosaurus all arrived to feed. Scientists have found bite marks on ribs, leg bones, and hip bones, and fossilized feces from carnivores that actually ate the bones themselves. Even the floods that eventually buried some sauropods caused problems: enough sediment to cover a 100-foot animal could also crush or wash away the more delicate bones, like the skull and the tip of the tail. The very forces that preserved large dinosaurs also damaged and destroyed parts of their skeletons.

The incomplete fossil record has even misled scientists in the past. Paleontologists once believed sauropods had vanished from North America for tens of millions of years, only to return later โ€” a supposed disappearing act scientists called the "sauropod hiatus." More recent research suggests those dinosaurs probably never actually disappeared; there were simply fewer environments during that time period that could preserve sauropod fossils, making it look like a gap that wasn't really there. It is a reminder that the fossil record does not just tell us what existed โ€” it also reflects where dinosaurs happened to die, what happened to their bodies afterward, and where scientists have chosen to dig.

For now, the biggest dinosaurs remain mysterious giants known only in pieces. Patagotitan is among the strongest contenders, but the race for the title may come down to just a few inches of body length. Each new fossil discovery anywhere in the world has the potential to shift the rankings entirely โ€” and somewhere out there, the bones of an even larger dinosaur may still be waiting underground.
