Scientists Found a 100-Million-Year-Old Bug With Claws Like a Crab

One hundred million years ago, a tiny predatory insect crept through a coastal forest in what is now Myanmar, using enormous claw-like front legs to snatch its prey. That insect ended up trapped in tree resin, which slowly hardened over millions of years into amber โ€” a golden, glass-like material that preserves ancient creatures in remarkable detail. Now, scientists have cracked open that time capsule and found something that has genuinely surprised the world of entomology, which is the scientific study of insects. The creature's claws look less like anything on a bug and more like the pincers of a crab.

Researchers at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in Germany made the discovery after studying a fossil preserved in amber from Myanmar's Kachin region. This part of the world has become famous among paleontologists โ€” scientists who study ancient life through fossils โ€” because its amber dates back to the Cretaceous period, roughly 100 million years ago, when dinosaurs dominated the planet. The amber acts like a perfect natural snapshot of ancient ecosystems, locking in insects, plants, and even tiny feathers in extraordinary detail.

To examine the fossil without damaging it, the team used micro-computed tomography, a high-powered scanning technology that works a lot like a hospital CT scan. It fires X-rays through the amber from many angles and stitches the data together into a precise 3D model of whatever is inside. This technique let the scientists study every curve, joint, and texture of the insect's body without touching it at all. What they found was striking: the bug's front legs ended in large pincer-like structures called chelae โ€” the same word used for the gripping claws of crabs and lobsters.

These chelae are extraordinarily rare in insects. Before this discovery, they had only been documented in three other insect groups across all of evolutionary history. Finding them again in this species means they evolved independently a fourth time โ€” a phenomenon scientists call convergent evolution. This is when completely unrelated animals develop the same physical solution to a problem through their own separate evolutionary paths. Think of how dolphins and sharks both have streamlined, torpedo-shaped bodies despite one being a mammal and the other a fish. Neither copied the other; both independently arrived at the same useful design. The crab-like claws of this ancient bug are another example of nature reinventing a useful tool from scratch.

To make sure the claws were truly unusual, the team conducted one of the most thorough comparisons in the study's field. They analyzed more than 2,000 chelae and similar grasping appendages โ€” body parts used for gripping โ€” from both living and extinct species. The results were clear: the fossil's claws were far more similar to those found in crabs, lobsters, and a group of small crustaceans called tanaids than to anything found in other insects. This gave the researchers confidence that they were dealing with a genuinely unique creature.

The insect was placed in an entirely new genus, a classification level just above species, and named Carcinonepa libererrantes. The first part of the name blends the Greek word for crab with nepa, a reference to the water bug family the insect belongs to. The species name libererrantes is a Latinized nod to the K-pop group Stray Kids โ€” the favorite band of Fenja Haug, one of the paper's co-authors โ€” because the fossil's dramatic claw pose reminded the team of the group's trademark stance. It is a reminder that scientists are real people with real passions, and that naming a new species is one of the genuine creative moments in scientific research.

Based on the rest of its body, researchers believe Carcinonepa libererrantes was related to modern toad bugs, a group of small land-dwelling predators that hunt other insects. The ancient version likely lived near the coast of that long-vanished Cretaceous forest, using its formidable chelae to seize prey much smaller than itself. Though it has been extinct for 100 million years, this remarkable little hunter is now part of the scientific record โ€” proof that evolution has always been far stranger and more inventive than we might expect.
